One of the most common questions I hear from couples is, “Which side should we stand on?” It’s a great question, but here’s the thing: there’s no right or wrong answer. The idea that there’s a “correct” side for the bride and groom is more tradition than necessity. So, let’s take a look at what works best for you.
Traditionally, the groom stands on the right (stage left if you’re thinking like a theatre buff) and the bride on the left when facing the guests. This old custom comes from the days when the groom might need to defend his bride with his sword-seriously.
The sword was worn on the left, and since most people were right-handed, standing on the right made sense.
But unless you’re planning a dramatic sword fight at your wedding (and if you are, we should definitely talk), this tradition doesn’t need to dictate your choices.
The most important thing to remember is that this is your day, and how you stand should reflect what makes you feel comfortable and connected and normal and nice. Some couples prefer to stand opposite their parents so they can exchange encouraging glances during the ceremony. Others like to stand on the same side as their family to avoid distractions. Some of you might have a “better” side when it comes to hair or makeup, which is a perfectly good reason to pick a spot.
In short, feel free to choose the side that works best for you. Whether it’s based on the layout of the venue, your preferred side for photos, or just because it feels right to you—go with what makes you happy. There’s no need to worry about tradition unless it’s something that matters to you personally.
And if, by chance, you’re planning an epic sword fight, then yes, the groom might want to be on the right—and make sure the best person is ready for action!
